About Vonovia Ruhrstadion

A leased meadow on Castroper Straße staged the first football here in October 1911. The Bochum ground was properly built up in 1921 and then rebuilt on a far larger scale between 1976 and 1979, reopening with a fixture against SG Wattenscheid 09 in July of that year. Some 27,599 spectators can be accommodated around the grass pitch today. Names have changed repeatedly, from Stadion an der Castroper Straße to Ruhrstadion and rewirpowerSTADION, and the venue hosted a 1992 European tie between CSKA Moscow and Rangers when Moscow proved unplayable.
