About Twickenham Stadium
Bought by the Rugby Football Union in 1907, the site was a market garden, which is why the ground has long been nicknamed the Cabbage Patch. The opening match, between Harlequins and Richmond, was played on 2 October 1909 in front of a capacity of 20,000. Expansion through the 1980s and 1990s produced an all-seater bowl holding 75,000, and redevelopment in 2005-06 lifted that to 82,000 while adding a hotel and a performing arts complex. Rugby World Cup finals were staged here in 1991 and 2015, and NFL games and concerts also feature.
