About The Shay
Groundwork on a former estate began in October 1920, with the first turf laid on the playing surface that December and football under way by 1921. Four stands now enclose the pitch: North, South, East and Skircoat, the North and South dating from the mid-1990s and the East, holding 3,500, opening in March 2010. Rugby league arrived in 1998 when the town's professional club needed a new home, making the venue dual-purpose. A crowd of 36,885 watched an FA Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur in February 1953. Calderdale council agreed to sell the ground in 2025.
