About The Oval

East Belfast's Glentoran settled at this ground in 1892, initially on a Dee Street plot, before the pitch was turned through ninety degrees in 1903. German bombs during the Belfast Blitz of 1941 destroyed both grandstands and left the ground unusable until 1949; a replacement main stand followed in 1953. Refurbishment in 2000 added a 1,600-capacity railway stand. Safety requirements now hold the ground to 6,050, far below the 35,000 who saw Rangers visit in the Cup Winners' Cup in September 1966. Sponsorship currently styles it the BetMcLean Oval.
