About Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium

Leased from Sultan Abdul Hamid II in 1908, the Kadıköy site became the first proper association football pitch in the Ottoman Empire and the first venue there to stage mass sporting events; Fenerbahçe bought it outright in 1933. Successive rebuilds followed, the most thorough running from 1999 to 2006, producing steep all-seater stands squeezed onto a tight plot and roofed with membrane panels on steel trusses. The arena hosted the 2009 UEFA Cup final, the last before that competition became the Europa League.
