About Stamford Bridge

Opened in 1877 for the London Athletic Club, the Fulham ground was leased by Gus Mears in 1904, who founded Chelsea to occupy it. A running track once ringed the pitch, and the terraces gave way to an all-seater layout through the 1990s following the Taylor Report. Its four stands, the West, East, Shed End and Matthew Harding, were each rebuilt in different periods. A record 82,905 watched a match against Arsenal in October 1935. Greyhound racing, speedway, baseball and floodlit cricket have all been staged here.
