Qualification for the Champions League group stage in 2008 transformed this Cluj-Napoca ground, which had opened in 1973 and held only about 10,000 before 2004. Architects Dico si Tiganas drew up the expansion, Transilvania Construction completed it that September, and capacity rose to 23,500 with roughly 17,500 seats and a UEFA three-star rating. A Romania-Lithuania World Cup qualifier marked the reopening, the national team's first match in Cluj-Napoca for 85 years. Three stands enclose the pitch on Strada Romulus Vuia, with a fourth of some 2,000 places long proposed for the northern end.
