About Stadio Olimpico

Work at the Foro Italico complex in north-western Rome began under the Fascist regime, where the Stadio dei Cipressi took shape from the early 1930s; postwar reconstruction produced the Stadio dei Centomila, opened on 17 May 1953. It hosted the 1960 Olympic ceremonies before becoming the shared home of Lazio and Roma. A rebuild between 1988 and 1990 ringed the bowl with a 13-metre steel band on twelve pillars carrying a Teflon and fibreglass membrane roof. Refurbishment in 2007-08 trimmed capacity to 70,634; Italy's rugby team has played here since 2012.
