About Stadio Artemio Franchi

Pier Luigi Nervi's reinforced concrete design opened on 13 September 1931 as the Stadio Giovanni Berta, and its 70-metre Tower of Marathon with spiral ramps remains the defining feature. Later called Stadio Comunale, it was renamed in 1991 for Artemio Franchi, a former president of the Italian football federation. The ground held 1934 World Cup ties and 1960 Olympic football, then lost its running track during rebuilding before Italia '90 that took seating to 47,282. The record gate, 58,271, came against Internazionale in November 1984.
