Thirty-one months of construction, running from May 1995 to January 1998, delivered France's national stadium at Saint-Denis in time for the World Cup it was designed around. Aymeric Zublena, Michel Regembal and Claude Constantini shaped the elliptical roof, a 13,000-tonne canopy spread over six hectares. Retractable lower tiers conceal an athletics track, letting the bowl switch between 81,338 for football and rugby and 77,083 for athletics. The 1998 World Cup final, the 2007 Rugby World Cup final, three Champions League finals and the 2024 Olympic closing ceremony have all been staged there.
