About St James' Park

Repeated planning disputes and awkward relations with neighbours left the bowl visibly lopsided, the towering Milburn Stand and Leazes End dwarfing a modest East Stand. The city-centre site has staged football since 1880, twelve years before Newcastle United settled there permanently. Capacity doubled to around 60,000 by 1905, floodlights arrived in 1953, and the 1998-2000 rebuild took the ground beyond 52,000 while producing a 64.5-metre cantilever described as Europe's largest. Chelsea's visit in 1930 drew a record 68,386. Rugby World Cup ties in 2015 and major concerts have also been held here.
