About St James Park

Land once used for fattening pigs became a sports field long before football arrived, and the enclosure was formally inaugurated for the game in September 1904. Exeter City bought the freehold in 1921 with the fee from selling Dick Pym to Bolton, rebuilt the grandstand after a fire in 1926, and saw 20,984 crammed in for an FA Cup replay with Sunderland in 1931. The city council took ownership in the 1990s. Redevelopment from 2016 swapped the ninety-year-old grandstand for the Stagecoach Adam Stansfield Stand, with student accommodation built alongside.
