About Solitude

Opened in 1890 when Cliftonville moved from nearby Oldpark Avenue, this north Belfast enclosure is the oldest football ground in Ireland. It served as the national team's home through the 1890s and early 1900s, staging eleven internationals, among them the 2-2 draw with England in March 1894, and it saw the first penalty kick awarded in international football. Fire destroyed the original stand in 1949. The McAlery Stand, seating 1,600, opened in 2008, floodlights followed in 2009 and a synthetic pitch in 2010.
