About Soldier Field
Holabird and Roche produced the neoclassical design, with Doric colonnades rising above the east and west entrances, and the U-shaped bowl opened in October 1924 as Grant Park Stadium. It was renamed the following year in dedication to American soldiers killed in the First World War. A 632 million dollar reconstruction in 2002-03 kept the outer colonnades but rebuilt everything within, cutting capacity and costing the venue its National Historic Landmark status in 2006. World Cup matches were played here in 1994.
