About Schüco Arena

Known locally as the Alm after the German word for a mountain pasture, a nickname earned by the rough state of its early playing surface, the Bielefeld ground opened in May 1926 as the Stadion an der Melanchthonstrasse. Concrete terracing and a grass pitch arrived in 1954, and successive rebuilds between 1996 and 2007 replaced all four stands. The east stand carries a glass roof with integrated photovoltaic panels. A record crowd of 36,000 attended in November 1978.
