About Sapporo Dome
Architect Hiroshi Hara's design, completed in 2001, solved a northern-Japan problem: how to grow real grass under a fixed roof 245 metres across. The answer was a hovering turf system that slides an entire natural pitch in and out of the building, with rotating stands reconfiguring the interior for baseball on artificial turf. Three group matches of the 2002 World Cup were played here, and the dome later hosted Rugby World Cup fixtures in 2019 and football at the 2020 Olympics.
