About Sandygate Road

Recognised by Guinness World Records as the oldest football ground on the planet, the Crosspool site dates from 1804 and was laid out for cricket before football arrived. On Boxing Day 1860 it staged the first inter-club match, Hallam against Sheffield FC. Spectators today watch from three vantage points: the covered Shed End terrace behind the goal on Sandygate Road, the Main Stand, and the Cricket Net End, a reminder that the enclosure is still shared with a cricket club.
