About San Siro
Piero Pirelli financed the original four-stand ground, modelled on English examples, which opened on 19 September 1926 with a derby watched by 35,000. The city council took it over in the 1930s and filled in the corners; a second phase in the 1950s planned three stacked rings reached by nineteen spiralling ramps, though the topmost was never built. The best-known work came between 1987 and 1990, when a third tier, eleven support towers and a roof carried on red girders were added. Four European Cup and Champions League finals have been decided here, and the 2026 Winter Olympics opened at the stadium.
