About Old Trafford

Archibald Leitch drew up the plans and the contractors Brameld and Smith built the ground beside the Bridgewater Canal, opening it on 19 February 1910. German bombing wrecked much of the structure during the Second World War, forcing the club to play at Maine Road until 1949. The three-tiered Sir Alex Ferguson Stand now rises over a pitch warmed by undersoil heating. Beyond club football the arena has hosted 1966 World Cup ties, Euro 1996 matches, the 2003 Champions League final, 2012 Olympic fixtures and rugby league Grand Finals.
