About Mineirão

Construction of the state-owned ground in Belo Horizonte’s Pampulha district ran from 1959 to 1965, when it opened with a Minas Gerais state side facing Argentina’s River Plate before 73,201 spectators. Officially titled Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto, it drew a record 132,834 for a 1997 Campeonato Mineiro final. Renovation before the 2013 Confederations Cup reshaped the bowl and set the seated figure at 66,658, after which the arena staged 2014 World Cup fixtures, including the hosts’ 7-1 semi-final defeat, and football at the 2016 Olympics.
