About Merkur Spiel-Arena

Successor to the demolished Rheinstadion, the Duesseldorf arena went up between 2002 and 2004 at a cost of around 240 million euros and opened that September. A retractable roof and a heating system allow year-round use, and the bowl holds 54,600 including nearly 10,000 standing places, rising to 66,500 for concerts. Known first as the LTU Arena and then the Esprit Arena, it staged the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest, five matches at UEFA Euro 2024 and a record handball crowd of 53,586 in January 2024.
