About Maracanã

Rio needed a showpiece arena for the 1950 World Cup, so excavation started in July 1948 and the bowl opened in June 1950. Its deciding match against Uruguay drew 173,850 spectators, the largest crowd recorded at a football game. Successive overhauls in 2000, 2006 and between 2010 and 2014 replaced the original two-tier terracing with a single tier of seats in Brazil's national colours. Since then the ground has staged the 2014 World Cup final and the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Olympic Games.
