About Maksimir

Opened in May 1912 as the first Zagreb ground with a proper grandstand, Maksimir has been rebuilt repeatedly rather than replaced. Fire destroyed it in 1941, and reconstruction after the war produced the four-stand bowl that hosted a semi-final at the 1976 European Championship and the 1987 Summer Universiade. Remodelling in 1998 pushed capacity beyond 38,000, though earthquake damage to the east stand later cut the usable figure to 25,912. The record crowd stands at 64,138, and a full replacement on the site is planned.
