About Ligga Arena

A former army powder depot in the Agua Verde district gave up its land for the original 1914 ground, which closed in 1986 and was demolished in 1997. The replacement opened in June 1999 and was enlarged between 2012 and 2014, adding rows alongside the pitch to reach roughly 42,000 seats for the World Cup, where four matches were played. A retractable roof, delayed after a labour tribunal suspended building work in October 2013, was finished in March 2015, the first on the continent. UFC 198 drew 45,207 spectators here in May 2016.
