About La Bombonera

A cramped plot in La Boca, formerly a railway shunting yard, forced a lopsided plan with one near-vertical flat side. Building started there in February 1938 to designs by Jose Luis Delpini, Viktor Sulcic and Raul Bes, and the stadium was finished by May 1940. The shape is said to have reminded Sulcic of a box of chocolates, which gave the ground its nickname, while the geometry traps sound and amplifies the crowd. A fourth tier arrived during work in 1995 and 1996, and an electronic screen followed in 2008.
