About Koshien Stadium

Opened on 1 August 1924, the park was the largest in Asia at the time, seating around 55,000, and its design borrowed from the Polo Grounds in New York. Ivy planted in imitation of Wrigley Field still covers the outer walls and has become the venue's emblem. The Hanshin Tigers moved in during 1936. Reconstruction between 2008 and 2010 removed the roof pillars and trimmed seating while keeping the open-air layout and natural outfield grass. The national high school baseball championship takes priority here each summer, and Babe Ruth played an exhibition on the field in 1934.
