About Johan Cruijff Arena

Built between 1993 and 1996 for roughly 140 million euros, the ground opened that August and remains the largest in the Netherlands. Its retractable roof was a novelty for European football, though poor light at pitch level meant the turf had to be relaid dozens of times before hybrid grass solved the problem. A rolling renovation from 2015 to 2020 reshaped the concave facade into a convex one and widened the concourses. Known as the Amsterdam ArenA until 2018, it has hosted a Champions League final, a Europa League final, Euro 2000 fixtures and matches at Euro 2020.
