About Hohe Warte

Perched on a hillside in Heiligenstadt in Vienna's Döbling district, the ground was designed by Eduard Schönecker and opened on 19 June 1921, when it counted among the largest sporting venues on the continent. Natural banking once held some 85,000, the figure recorded for Austria against Italy in 1923. Boxing followed, including Georges Carpentier's bout with Arthur Townley in May 1924, as did an open-air staging of Aida. The Praterstadion's arrival in 1931 ended its primacy, and safety limits after a 2006 renovation cut the total to 5,500.
