About Gresty Road
Railway expansion forced Crewe Alexandra off their original 1897 enclosure, and the club settled on the present Gresty Road site in 1906, at first with wooden stands and banked terracing. Fire later destroyed the main stand, rebuilt in timber in 1932. Phased reconstruction through the 1990s culminated in a 5.2 million pound main stand in 2000 that completed the all-seater conversion, leaving four stands and a shade over 10,000 places. Twenty thousand crammed in for an FA Cup tie with Tottenham in January 1960; the all-seated best is 10,092 against Manchester City in March 2002. Sponsors have branded it the Alexandra Stadium and later the Mornflake Stadium.
