About Fritz-Walter-Stadion

Perched on the Betzenberg hill above Kaiserslautern, the ground opened in May 1920 and was called the Betzenbergstadion until 1985, when it took the name of Fritz Walter, the 1. FC Kaiserslautern captain who lifted the 1954 World Cup. A reconstruction costing 76.5 million euros between 2002 and 2005 raised capacity from 38,500 to just over 49,000 and renewed the media and floodlighting installations for the 2006 World Cup, at which five matches were staged here. The record crowd of 50,754 saw a draw with Bayern Munich in May 2006.
