About Europa-Park Stadion
Freiburg's council financed this Brühl-district arena to replace the cramped Dreisamstadion, whose undersized and noticeably sloping pitch had become unsuitable for top-flight football. Approved by referendum in 2015 and designed by HPP Architekten, it broke ground in November 2018 and finally opened on 7 October 2021 after pandemic delays, SC Freiburg meeting RB Leipzig. Rectangular and 25 metres tall, it holds 34,700, roughly a third of them standing, with the home support behind the south goal. UEFA competitions use the name Stadion am Wolfswinkel; nearby housing brings restrictions on evening kick-offs.
Home club
SC Freiburg is a German football club from Freiburg im Breisgau, in the south-west near the Black Forest, founded in 1904.
