About Estádio Nilton Santos

Known locally as the Engenhao after the Engenho de Dentro district around it, the arena was built between 2003 and 2007 at a final cost of 380 million reais, more than six times the original estimate. It opened on 30 June 2007 before 43,810 spectators, Botafogo beating Fluminense 2-1. Athletics at the 2007 Pan American Games and at the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games took place here. Roof faults closed the stadium from March 2013 until 2015. Its municipal owners have extended Botafogo's lease to 2051.
