About Estádio Municipal de Braga

Quarried into the flank of Monte do Castro, Eduardo Souto de Moura's design leaves one end of the pitch facing a sheer rock face instead of a stand. Steel cables inspired by Inca rope bridges carry the canopies over the two side stands, and a 5,000-square-metre plaza beneath the pitch links them. Excavation pushed the bill to 200 million euros, the dearest of the ten Euro 2004 venues, where it staged two group matches. It later won a 2006 Chicago Athenaeum international architecture award.
