About Estadio Monumental

Macul, in the south-east of Santiago, has held this ground since a 1975 double-header watched by 25,599 people, although problems with the venue meant only five further matches were played before it was rebuilt. Reopening in September 1989 against Penarol, it then held between 62,500 and 65,000, and a 1992 league game with Universidad de Chile drew a record 69,305. The 1991 Copa Libertadores final was decided here. Safety work after a fatality in 1993 cut capacity to roughly 47,000.
