About Estadio Monumental
Ecuador's largest ground rises in the Bellavista district of Guayaquil, commissioned by club president Isidro Romero Carbo so that Barcelona could stop renting the Estadio Modelo. The opening fixture on 27 December 1987 ended in a 3-1 defeat by Penarol of Uruguay, with Pele among the guests. Five matches of the 1993 Copa America, the final included, were played on its 105-by-70-metre pitch. Around 5,100 square metres of the complex house clinics, shops and restaurants. A naming-rights deal with Banco Pichincha ran from 2008 until 2015.
