About Estadio Metropolitano
Foundations were laid in December 1979, after plans to enlarge the ageing Romelio Martinez stadium of 1934 fell through, and six years of building produced a 46,788-seat bowl that opened on 11 May 1986 with Uruguay beating Junior 2-1. Colombia's national team adopted it as their designated home. The 2001 Copa America, the 2011 Under-20 World Cup opening ceremony and the 2021 Copa America final were all staged here, as was Carlos Valderrama's 2004 farewell. A 22.5-billion-peso overhaul renewed screens, lighting, the athletics track and security systems.
