About Estadio Martínez Valero
Replacing the Campo de Altabix of 1923, Juan Boix Matarredona's design opened on 8 September 1976 with a 3-3 draw between Elche and Mexico. Its playing area of 108 by 70 metres is among the largest in European football. The stadium staged 1982 World Cup fixtures, among them Hungary's 10-1 defeat of El Salvador, the widest winning margin in the tournament's history, watched by 23,000 people. It also hosted the 2002-03 Copa del Rey final, carries UEFA elite status and regularly stages Spain internationals.
