About Estádio Beira-Rio

Thirteen years of work, beginning in 1956 with landfill along the Guaíba, preceded the opening of Internacional's ground on Easter Sunday 1969, when a crowd put at around 100,000 saw a 2-1 win over Benfica. It is formally named for José Pinheiro Borda, the Portuguese engineer who led construction and died in 1965. An overhaul between 2012 and 2014 added a roof of 65 interlocking steel modules carrying PTFE panels, and five 2014 World Cup matches followed.
