About Estadio Azteca

Sunk some nine metres below ground level at Santa Úrsula in southern Mexico City, the bowl was designed by Pedro Ramírez Vázquez and Rafael Mijares Alcérreca and opened on 29 May 1966 at an altitude of about 2,200 metres. It staged the 1968 Olympic football tournament and became the first venue to host two World Cup finals, in 1970 and 1986. Renovation completed for the 2026 tournament laid a hybrid pitch, replaced seating and added media and hospitality boxes.
