About Estadio Alejandro Villanueva

Known to supporters as Matute after the La Victoria neighbourhood around it, the ground was designed by the Uruguayan engineer Walter Lavalleja on land granted in 1951. A foundation stone was laid in 1952 but money ran out; building resumed in 1969 and the stadium finally opened on 27 December 1974 with a 2-2 draw against Nacional. It carried the club's own name until 2000, when it was rededicated to Alejandro Villanueva. Peru used it during the 1975 Copa América.
