About Ellis Park Stadium

Built on a former quarry and dumping ground in 1927-28, the Doornfontein venue opened with a test against the All Blacks in June 1928. It was pulled down and reconstructed between 1979 and 1982, then expanded again in 2009. South Africa won the 1995 Rugby World Cup final on this pitch, and the ground later held 2009 Confederations Cup ties and seven 2010 FIFA World Cup matches, among them a quarter-final. A crush during a 2001 league derby killed 43 people. Capacity stands at 62,567.
