About Denka Big Swan Stadium

The roof's curved profile, likened to a swan's outstretched wings, gave this Niigata arena its Big Swan name, a nod also to the waterfowl that winter nearby. Work began in 1997 and the stadium opened on 29 April 2001, in time to stage three 2002 World Cup fixtures, among them England's 3-0 defeat of Denmark in the second round. A crowd of 42,223 watched an Albirex Niigata match in November 2003, the highest recorded here. Rugby union and other sports also use the ground.
