About Daejeon World Cup Stadium

Nicknamed the Purple Arena, the Daejeon ground was completed in September 2001 in the Noeun-dong area of Yuseong-gu, built by Yooshin Architects using precast concrete to keep costs down. A partially retractable roof shelters the stands, and the design deliberately avoided ornament in favour of structural expression. Three matches of the 2002 FIFA World Cup were staged here, including a round-of-16 tie, after which the surrounding land was developed into a wider sports park. Daejeon Hana Citizen moved in from the older Daejeon Sports Complex.
