About Commonwealth Stadium
Work began in 1974 on a purpose-built athletics and football venue for the 1978 Commonwealth Games, and the McCauley district ground opened that July with 42,500 seats and a grass field. An expansion of some 18,000 seats before the 1983 Summer Universiade pushed it past 60,000, while wider seats fitted in 2012 trimmed the figure to 56,302. Artificial turf replaced the grass in 2010. The 2001 World Championships in Athletics, five Grey Cups and FIFA tournament matches have been staged here, with a record 63,317 present in 2010.
