About Astana Arena
Kazakhstan's largest football ground was built between 2006 and 2009 for about 185 million dollars to designs by Populous and Tabanlıoğlu Architects. The elliptical two-tier bowl holds 30,244 on an artificial pitch and carries a retractable roof that shuts out the severe local winter. It opened on 3 July 2009 and staged its first competitive international that October, a World Cup qualifier against Croatia. The opening ceremony of the 2011 Asian Winter Games was held here, and glass roof panels collapsed under snow in February 2020.
