About Arena do Grêmio

Planning for a successor to the ageing Estadio Olimpico Monumental started in the mid-2000s, and a pre-feasibility study in 2006 confirmed the case for a new ground. Work began on 20 September 2010 and finished on 8 December 2012, producing a 55,662-capacity arena designed by PLARQ and built by OAS within a wider scheme of conference space, a hotel, a shopping mall, housing and parking. It holds UEFA's Category Four rating, uniquely in Brazil. Passed over for the 2014 World Cup, it staged five matches at the 2019 Copa America.
