About Arena da Amazônia
Gerkan, Marg and Partners took the straw baskets woven around Manaus as the model for the metal lattice that wraps this ground, built between 2010 and 2014 for the World Cup at a cost of around 270 million dollars. A reflective white skin, generous shade and natural ventilation were specified to cope with equatorial heat. It opened in March 2014 with room for 42,924 spectators. Four group matches were staged that summer, including England against Italy, and the venue also hosted football at the 2016 Olympic Games as well as occasional concerts.
