About Anfield

Opened in 1884 on land owned by John Orrell, the ground was Everton's home until a dispute over its management led to Liverpool being formed there in 1892. Its name derives from Old and Middle English words meaning a field on a slope. Four stands enclose the pitch: the Spion Kop, named after a South African hill and rebuilt in 1928 for 30,000 standing spectators, the Main Stand, the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand and the Anfield Road End. All-seater conversion came in 1994, and expansions in 2016 and 2024 pushed capacity above 61,000. Record attendance is 61,905, set in 1952.
